Course Reserves Policy

Information about what items can be put on reserve, who can request them, and how to request them.

Policy

As part of the MCPHS Libraries' mission to support students' educational needs, the Libraries attempt to acquire shared copies of course materials upon professors' requests.

Books

The Libraries' staff members will purchase e-books whenever possible. The Libraries do not purchase the following types of books for reserve: loose-leafs, laboratory notebooks, workbooks that are primarily fill-in format (due to copyright restrictions), course packs, or other items not suitable for circulation. In order to be fiscally responsible and keep library costs down amidst ever-increasing book prices, the Libraries will not purchase new editions of books if the Libraries already have a previous edition that is less than 3 years old. If you submit a request that contradicts this rule, the Library's staff members will inform you that a recent edition is already available and will provide information about it. You will have the chance to appeal this decision by providing evidence of the substantial changes in the newer edition that requires a new purchase.

Videos

The Libraries will order short-term leases of streaming videos whenever possible.

Procedure

Send your course information and the bibliographic information for any books or video that you might want placed on reserve for the semester.

You can submit Reserve Requests through one of three methods:

  1. Using the Course Reserves Request Form
  2. As a Department, sending a booklist for all courses in the Department to the Course Reserves team.
  3. Emailing the Course Reserves team directly with the information on the requested books and the relevant course

One of the first two options is preferable but the third is always available! Ultimately, all items requested for reserves will be listed on our Course Reserves Guide .
