Research for International Students

The ways research is conceived, approved, conducted, and reported in the U.S. may differ from how it is done in other countries. This guide describes those processes and some of the context for them.

Collect and analyze your data.

Follow the Plan That Has Been Approved

In your proposal, you said how you planned to collect and analyze the data. Do what you said you would do. If you discover that your plans were flawed:

  1. Stop collecting or analyzing the data.
  2. Decide how to fix the flaw.
  3. Work with your professor or advisor to submit a revised proposal.
  4. Wait for that proposal to be approved.
  5. Start collecting and analyzing the data according to the new plan.
