Assessing Information Literacy Instruction

Methods librarians can use to assess and improve their teaching.

About Post-Session Questions

Asking students and subject faculty to reflect on their learning and/or the teaching they observed is a great way to indirectly assess your teaching. While in-class activities directly demonstrate what students have learn, reflecting on learning via a post-session survey can make connections between new skills and other scenarios in which to apply them.

On this page you'll find few different versions of the questions:

  • HTML: the questions are embedded in this page
  • Downloadable document: for paper distribution
  • LibWizard: customizable links for MCPHS librarians to use in live (online or on-ground) sessions.

Questions for Students

  • What is one thing you learned? How is that information or skill useful?
  • Did the librarian teach what you expected to learn?
  • What went well in this lesson?
  • What would you change about this lesson?
  • What questions do you still have?
  • What else would be helpful for the librarian to know?

LibWizard Student Survey

A ready-made survey that MCPHS librarians can use to ask students these questions.

To use these exact questions:

Instruction librarians can create a customized URL to get notified of new responses. These customized links will only work if your name has been added to a hidden question on this form and the link uses the same spelling, capitalization, and punctuation as that form.

  1. Use the link format https://mcphs.libwizard.com/f/forstudents?4221080=First%20Last
  2. Replace the word First with your first name and the word Last with your last name. Be sure to capitalize the first letter of each part of your name.
  3. Submit a test response to be sure that your URL is correct. You should receive an email with your answers.

Other people at MCPHS can ask to be added to the list.

To customize the survey:

  1. Sign into LibWizard.
  2. Click/activate Surveys.
  3. Click/activate Create New.
  4. Change "Blank Slate" to "Post-Session Questions for Students."
  5. Follow the rest of the steps to create your survey.
  6. Click "Survey Options."
  7. Select "Submission Behavior."
  8. Add the email address(es) for anyone who should be notified when someone submits a response.
  9. Make any other changes you want.
  10. Save Your Changes.

Questions for Subject Faculty

  • Did the librarian teach what you expected? Please explain your answer.
  • What's one thing you learned? (For example: a different way of searching in a familiar database or a new way to interact with your students.)
  • What is one thing you wish the librarian had spent more time on or covered in greater detail?
  • What were you surprised your students didn't already know?
  • What do you anticipate students will have follow-up questions about or be confused about?
  • If time were not a barrier, what would you like the librarian to add to the session?
  • What else would be helpful for the librarian to know?
