Kaltura and its accompanying Media Center is a building block for Blackboard that allows you to upload existing videos, create new ones, or have your students create engaging videos and securely upload them to your course!

Kaltura is a building block for Blackboard that allows you and your students to easily record, upload, manage, and publish video content to a course that is then viewable on any device. If you plan on using videos in your course, it is highly encouraged to share them with your class using Kaltura instead of posting them directly onto Blackboard. Videos posted on Blackboard may not stream properly, and more importantly, may slow down Blackboard for the entire university.
All videos you upload to Kaltura will be stored in your personal My Media library. You can quickly access My Media by creating a My Media module on your Blackboard Notifications Dashboard.
To Create the My Media Module
1. Login to Blackboard and select Notifications Dashboard on the top-left side of the screen.
2. Click Add Module.
3. Locate My Media and select Add.
4. Click OK to save the changes and return to the Notifications Dashboard.
You can use the My Media module to manage your video library. You can edit existing videos, add / edit tags and descriptions on videos, share videos with your courses, or even delete your videos from the Kaltura server.
Kaltura Capture is Kaltura’s new program for creating personal capture videos. Using Kaltura Capture allows you to create new videos that allow you to select up to two video sources such as your webcam and a screen, or even two screens at the same time. These recordings are a great way to deliver weekly updates and other quick pieces of information, or to add a personalized element to wholly online course offerings. Note that these videos do not need to be of professional quality and cannot be edited.
Before you can use Kaltura Capture, you will need to download and install it from Blackboard. This is something you can do yourself and does not require Help Desk assistance.

Note: You only have to do this once per computer. After syncing Kaltura Capture with your account, any videos you record with the program will be uploaded to your central My Media library.

Recordings can be uploaded by clicking Save and Upload on the Kaltura Capture entry page, or by launching Kaltura Capture, clicking the Manage button, and clicking Upload next to the desired recording. All uploads will be sent to your My Media page and can be brought into any course by using the Kaltura Mashup tool.
Videos should never be uploaded directly to Blackboard as they can slow down the system and may not be accessible on every device. If you already have a video you would like to share with students, or if you would like students to share videos with you, it is possible to upload them to your Course Gallery.
The Course Gallery serves as a central media library for your course. By posting videos directly into the gallery, you can make it easier for your students to quickly find the video they are looking for.
1.) Login to Blackboard, enter the desired course, and navigate to Tools > Upload / Record Media
2.) Click Add New > Media Upload
3.) Click Choose a file to upload.
4.) Select the desired video on your computer, and click Open.
5.) Insert a name for the video in the Title field, any video descriptions in the Description field, and searchable tags in the Tags field. Click Save to save the changes.
- If you are having students upload videos, it is a good idea to come up with a clear naming convention they should use when uploading their video (e.g. firstname_assignment).
6.) Close the Kaltura My Media tab to return to the course and navigate back to Tools > Media Gallery.
7.) Click Add Media.
8.) Select the box next to the video you want to add to the course, and then click +Publish.
With just a few steps, you can import media from another media gallery you have access to!
There are two mechanisms for embedding Kaltura videos into your Blackboard course:
This is the simplest way to display your media in the course. This process creates a content item in the course that students will click to access the media.
After having created your media, navigate to the place in your course where you would like the media to be accessed. Be sure you are in Edit Mode.
You may edit this item to modify the title and item availability if you like.A. Create a meaningful title
B. Add a description that provides context for your students
C. Permit Users to View the Item
D. Track Number of Views (Optional, only tracks if an item was "clicked" not full analytics on engagement)
E. Select Date & Time Restrictions (Optional, if you'd like to post videos in a sequential fashion, etc.)
F. Select SAVE to add the content item to your course. All new content items automatically appear at the bottom of a content area and can be repositioned by dragging/dropping up or down in a window.
Your video will display:
You can insert a playable thumbnail embed of your media into any rich text editing window in the course that has the Add Content + button (e.g. Discussion Forum/Thread, Assignment, Item, Quiz Question, etc.).
After having created your media, navigate to the place in your course where you want to insert an item that contains a playable thumbnail embed of the media from your My Media library.
Edit the title for your item and then click the Add Content + button in the bottom row of the text editing tool panel
If you do not see the Add Content + button, you may need to click the ellipsis [...] to display the full tool list.
Select Kaltura Media.
This will display your My Media content, click the blue SELECT button for the media you want to embed in the text window
This will create a playable thumbnail embed of the media in the item.
You may see a second, smaller thumbnail and a table of video properties below your video. This will not be displayed once you submit the item.
Finish editing the item and click Submit.

To create an assignment using Kaltura's Video Quiz (VQ) that integrates with the Blackboard Grade Book
When students answer and submit their quizzes (see Taking a Quiz) the grade is automatically sent to the Blackboard Grade Center for the relevant assignment and student.
Any media with narration (video or audio) that is uploaded to Kaltura will be automatically machine captioned using Kaltura's auto-captioning feature. The accuracy of the captioning frequently exceeds 90-95%, but also depends on the clarity and volume of the narration, whether there is background noise, and to some extent, the content of the narration. The auto-captioning system attempts to determine proper spelling, punctuation, and capitalization. These captions are displayed when users choose the CC button at the bottom right of the player interface.
Once a video is captioned, a full transcript is also available via the transcript panel when the player is viewed in MediaSpace or in a Media Gallery in a Blackboard course. The transcript panel is not visible in an embedded video, though captions are still available via the closed captioning button.
From your My Media gallery, locate the video you'd like to edit, and select the pencil icon (Edit)
Next, you'll select the "Captions" tab and open the Captions Editor:
Inside the Caption Editor, you have a variety of options:
A. SEARCH & REPLACE:
You may search for specific text strings within the caption file. Use Replace to change a text string to something else throughout the file. (Helpful for medical terms, etc. where capitalization may be a priority)
B. ADD SPEAKER
This allows you to define who is speaking during a particular section of the captions. To add a speaker, select the box next to one (or several) caption sections and then type a name in the Add speaker to selected items field and select "Add". (Great for guest lecturers or during co-instructed lectures)
C. TIMESTAMP and CONTENT EDITOR
This is the fun part! Use this space to edit captions and determine when the captions will be displayed. If you create timestamps which overlap, the editor will highlight the overlapping timestamps.
D. VIDEO PREVIEW
The video preview allows you to play and pause the video as you're editing captions. If you select Autoscroll, the caption sections in the content editor will scroll as the video plays.
E. REVERT & SAVE
Revert will wipe ALL changes/edits you've made and allow you to start over (be careful!), and once you've completed all of your edits you'll select Save.
